Rebounding Startled Awake Flip with Narset
Asked by Krakensbreath52 7 years ago
If I use Narset Transcendent's -2 ability to give Startled Awake Flip rebound, does it keep it when I return it to my hand? The ability says that it gains rebound, but not until end of turn? I read a few of the rules around rebound and it says:
If you cast a card from exile this way, it will go to your graveyard when it resolves or is countered. It won't go back to exile.
So theoretically I can return Startled Awake Flip to my hand because of its ability, does it still have rebound?

No you can't.
Rebound gives the card a DTA (delayed triggered ability) that triggers at your next upkeep.
While it's in exile, you cannot activate its ability to put it onto the battlefield, nor return it to your hand.
When rebound happens, it is cast then resolves into the graveyard. At that point, rebound no longer applies to it so it wouldn't matter if you brought it to your hand or not.

There is a slight but important distinction between the spell gaining rebound and the card gaining rebound. Much like someone countering Startled Awake Flip doesn't counter the spell again when you return it to your hand and recast it, Narset giving Startled Awake Flip rebound doesn't mean it has rebound again when it returns to your hand.
