Reanimating Gray Merchant
Asked by Gazoir 8 years ago
Just like a lot of people, I like getting good value out of my 1-drops.
So consider the following board:
- I have 4 live left, my opponent has 6 life left
- I have a total of 7 devotion to black.
- I have a Gray Merchant of Asphodel in my graveyard
- I cast Reanimate on the Gray Merchant
Reanimate costs me 5 life (the converted casting cost of Gray Merchant), but I also gain 7 life from his ETB effect.
So here's the question: who wins? Does the life gain resolve before the game checks to see if I'm dead? Or am I doomed?

State-based actions are checked before a player receives priority. You'll lose for having -1 life before Gray Merchant of Asphodel's ability is put onto the stack.
