Ral Zarek and Coin Flipping

Asked by TheJugulator 6 years ago

I was messing around with a random Coin flipping EDH style, and both my friend and I weren't sure if Ral Zarek's -7 ability would count as winning the toss. I'm assuming it doesn't since it doesn't explicitly say you win, it says if they coins come up heads. But I just wanted to see how well it worked with Chance Encounter.

705.2. To flip a coin for an object that cares whether the coin comes up heads or tails, each affected player flips a coin without making a call. No player wins or loses this kind of flip.

No, it doesn't. A player wins a coin flip when he chooses the side of a coin (heads or tails), flips the coin, and the side that comes up is the side chosen by the player. Whenever that happens, you put a counter on Chance Encounter. However, Ral Zarek is an object and even though its ultimate requires flipping coins, you don't win or lose any of those flips, regardless of whether one or more flips come up heads.
