Quick question on Mizzix exp counters from a noob

Asked by rangerdanger1123 6 years ago

I am looking to build a Mizzix EDH deck but I am unsure of some of the interactions. Any help would be much appreciated.

I start my turn 5 with Mizzix on the field, 5 mana and no experience counters. Can I High Tide into Quicken into Ponder and gain 3 experience counters, or would I only gain 1?

I'm sure this has been discussed before but I'm struggling to find a specific answer.

Cheers

Remember to link all the cards in your question to make sure everyone understands what's going on: Mizzix of the Izmagnus

You can get 3, but only by casting Ponder first. Mizzix triggers when you cast the spell, which means the trigger will be put onto the stack on top of that spell and will resolve before the spell can start resolving. In your original suggested sequence:

  • You cast High Tide and Mizzix triggers because you have 0 XP
  • You respond to the trigger with Quicken and Mizzix triggers again because you still have 0 XP. Note that you can't respond with Ponder at this point because Quicken hasn't resolved yet
  • If no one has any more responses, the most recent Mizzix trigger resolves and gives you 1 XP
  • If no one has any more responses, Quicken resolves. Playing Ponder after this point won't trigger Mizzix because you have 1 XP
  • If no one has any more responses, the first Mizzix trigger finally resolves and gives you another 1 XP (total 2)
  • If no one has any more responses, High Tide resolves

If instead you cast Ponder first, you can respond to the resulting Mizzix trigger by casting either of High Tide or Quicken, and then cast the other in response to the second Mizzix trigger, which will trigger Mizzix a third time.

You would gain one counter.

11/4/2015 You finish casting a spell, including paying its costs, before Mizzixs first ability triggers. The ability that gives you the experience counter will resolve before the spell that caused it to trigger.

Mizzix of the Izmagnus will check for each of those spells how many experience counters you have against the CMC of the spell on the stack. She will give you one counter from High Tide being the first spell cast, then when she checks for Quicken and Ponder, she will see that the spells don't have a higher CMC than the number of experience counters you have, and will not give you any additional.

Conversely if you cast them all in response to each other, she will give you one counter for Ponder and then the rest of the spells will not meet her requirements for additional counters.
