Question concerning free spells and alternative costs.

Asked by Legendxp 8 years ago

Let's say I have a card that lets me cast my Haze of Rage without paying it's mana cost. Can I still pay an additional 2 to return it to my hand?

What if I have a Blind Obedience in play? Can I still pay an extra W/B to extort?

Also, if a card says I MAY cast something without paying it's mana cost, do I still have the option to pay it's cost? Also, do I HAVE to cast it? (For example cascade text: (When you cast this spell, exile cards from the top of your library until you exile a nonland card that costs less. You may cast it without paying its mana cost. Put the exiled cards on the bottom in a random order.))

  1. Yes, this is an optional additional cost and you have the option to pay those when paying for a psell via alternative methods (like for free).

  2. Same as above, but Blind obidience only cares whether you cast a spell or not, how the spell was paid does not matter. The triggered ability will be put on the stack after you finish casting the spell and you have the option to pay the cost of W/B. If you do not, you do not get to extort.

  3. You are not obligated to cast the spell you cascade into. You will not have the option to pay its normal casting cost if you are casting it via an alternative method (like for free).
