Question about the order of resolving abilities

Asked by krunchyfrogg 7 years ago

Here's the scenario: I have a Thing in the Ice  Flip and a Chandra, Fire of Kaladesh  Flip on the battlefield.

I cast 3 red instants in one turn, enough to remove the ice counters from TITI and enough to flip Chandra into a planeswalker at the same time.

Which resolves first? Does TITI flip, sending Chandra back to my hand? Or does Chandra become a planeswalker, and is therefore immune to TITI's bounce effect first?

TIA

Don't forget that Thing needs 4 instants/sorceries cast to be able to transform and Chandra must have have her activated ability performed for her to transform. I'm sure you knew that, just clarifying.

As long as you are doing all of this in the same phase, you should be able to control the stack to allow you to transform Chandra first and then Thing.

Sorry I was unclear in my initial post.

I am assuming the 3rd red spell to flip Chandra was also melting the last ice counter off TITI. I know TITI needs to have 4 counters melted off, but we can assume, for the sake of this argument, that it was removed by a spell that is not red.

It depends on how you stack Chandra's untap and the last ice counter getting removed from TitI. Chandra, Fire of Kaladesh  Flip transforms when her own ability resolves and TitI transforms when you remove the last ice counter. If you resolve the untap on Chandra, Fire of Kaladesh  Flip first you can either use her to ping and transform her before the last ice counter is removed or in response to TitI's bounce ability. If you remove the last ice counter first Chandra will still be tapped when the bounce trigger happens and will not be able to transform.

Ok, so if I'm understanding correctly Gidgetimer, I can choose to resolve the two in any order is like to, therefore I can have Chandra flip into a Planeswalker, and have TITI flip into Awoken Horror, both successfully, in the same turn. Right?

it is a little more complicated than that (as in after you untap Chandra you have to tap her to activate her ability all before the bounce ability from TitI transforming resolves.) but yes you can transform both cards in the same turn as long as you resolve everything in the correct sequence.

You can actually flip Chandra after the second red spell anyway, by pinging, then cast red spell to untap, ping, red spell, ping, flip.
