Question about Genesis Hydra ability

Asked by themanofhat 9 years ago

So the ability of Genesis Hydra says "when you cast genesis hydra, reveal the top x cards of your library. You may put a nonland permanent from among them onto the battlefield with converted mana cost x or less." My question is what if its another card with mana cost x such as another Genesis Hydra ? So can I play a genesis hydra with, let's say 10 mana just to make it easy, reveal the top 8 cards of my deck, choose another Genesis Hydra then cast the what would possibly be the 6/6 Genesis Hydra ? is that allowed?

The value of X for Genesis Hydra or any other X spell is defined only when you're casting it as a spell and paying its mana cost. Any other time, it's 0. If you pick another Genesis Hydra with the first one's ability then it will enter with 0 counters and won't trigger its own first ability at all (because you're not casting it).

No. You don't cast the chosen permanent but put it onto the battlefield. When you do, you are not allowed to pay any costs. X would be 0 and the second Genesis Hydra would be moved to the graveyard as a state based action.
