So if I play Elvish Champion in a deck is he legally considered an elf or a lord? Before 10th edition he was a lord but 10th edition reprinted him as an elf.

Cards are always treated according to their Oracle text, which can be found at Gatherer.
Elvish Champion is only an Elf. The "Lord" creature type is obsolete and has been replaced.
