Question about Control and losing the game.

Asked by Schuesseled 9 years ago

Say I have Marchesa, the Black Rose on the battlefield, I have taken control of someone's Arcbound Reclaimer with Slave of Bolas .

At the end of turn this guy is sacrificed and returns to play under my control thanks to my friend Marchesa.

What happens to the reclaimer if i was to later lose the game?

The comprhensive rules state:

"800.4a When a player leaves the game, all objects (see rule 109) owned by that player leave the game and any effects which give that player control of any objects or players end. Then, if that player controlled any objects on the stack not represented by cards, those objects cease to exist. Then, if there are any objects still controlled by that player, those objects are exiled. This is not a state-based action. It happens as soon as the player leaves the game. If the player who left the game had priority at the time he or she left, priority passes to the next player in turn order whos still in the game."

Is marchesa's effect considered to be giving control of the reclaimer to me or is it simply a permanent that I control.

If it was the former would it return to my opponent's field or graveyard?

I think it would be the latter and get exiled as I lose the game, am I right about that?

The second option is the correct answer. There are no abilities that are affecting the control of Arcbound Reclaimer . Marchera's effect simply allows you to gain control of a creature permanently and ignoring the duration restriction by making it a new object. The Arcbound Reclaimer will be exiled immediately and your opponent will not be able to get it back.

The third example in the comp rules shows a situation with very similar outcomes.

Example: Alex casts Bribery , which reads, Search target opponents library for a creature card and put that card onto the battlefield under your control. Then that player shuffles his or her library, targeting Bianca. Alex puts Serra Angel onto the battlefield from Biancas library. If Bianca leaves the game, Serra Angel also leaves the game. If, instead, Alex leaves the game, Serra Angel is exiled.

So putting something into play under your control doesn't equal to being given control of it. Thanks, that's what i thought.
