Question about Clone+Pith Driller+Rage Extractor

Asked by boneknitter 8 years ago

I'm working on a deck featuring Clone, Pith Driller, and Rage Extractor. My question is this: If I have Pith Driller on the field and cast Clone, making a copy of Driller, will the ability of Rage Extractor trigger? I ask because the Infect symbol is not in the mana cost of Clone, a requirement of the Extractor, but is in the mana cost of Pith Driller, the creature that's being copied

It will not trigger. Clone only becomes a copy after it resolves (while it resolves) but it is just a 0/0 with a mana cost until after you have cast it.

Rage Extractor's ability only triggers when you cast a spell and only if that spell has a Phyrexian mana symbol (it's not called an infect symbol) in its mana cost.

Clone doesn't copy anything until it's entering the battlefield. As a spell, it has all of the characteristics printed on Clone. This means it doesn't have a Phyrexian mana symbol in its mana cost. Rage Extractor's ability won't trigger.
