Question about Arcane Adaptation and "creature cards you own"

Asked by Argy 6 years ago

Does Arcane Adaptation allow me to search my library for any Creature card, when General Tazri enters the field?

I'm not quite sure about the parametres of "creature cards you own".

Relevant exerpt from the Comprehensive Rules:

108.3 The owner of a card in the game is the player who started the game with it in his or her deck. If a card is brought into the game from outside the game rather than starting in a player’s deck, its owner is the player who brought it into the game. If a card starts the game in the command zone, its owner is the player who put it into the command zone to start the game. Legal ownership of a card in the game is irrelevant to the game rules except for the rules for ante. (See rule 407.)

Yes, an Arcane Adaptation on Allies would allow you to search your library for any creature card with General Tazri. Interestingly, you can also use Adaptation to change the creature type of your commander while they are in the command zone (say, naming Zombie and casting Gisa and Geralf for free with a Rooftop Storm), and if I am reading this correctly, an Adaptation naming Eldrazi would allow you to cast any creature you wanted with Spawnsire of Ulamog.

The physical card representation of a creature is only a "creature" on the battlefield. When it is on the stack in the process of being cast, it is a "creature spell". In any other zone, it is a "creature card".

Example: General Tazri is a "creature" on the battlefield, a "creature spell" on the stack while it is being cast, and anywhere else, it is a "creature card".

Because General Tazri allows you to search your library, it allows you to search for a creature card, because as stated, the physical representations of the creatures are "creature cards" unless the are on the stack (creature spells) or on the battlefield (creatures).
