Playing a card in response to Collective Brutality

Asked by Argy 4 years ago

If someone casts Collective Brutality and chooses to have me discard Wild Slash , can I cast it in response, thereby giving them no legal target for that part of the spell?

No. Which spell to discard is chosen as part of Collective Brutality 's resolution. No player has priority to activate an ability or cast a spell during the resolution of a spell or ability.

The latest opportunity you have to cast this spell is while CB is on the stack, before it resolves. At that point though, you do not know what the opponent will choose to discard.

Hey Boza, can you explain why you can kill Archangel Avacyn  Flip while her Indestructible ability is still on the stack?

@Argy

Archangel Avacyn  Flip's ETB ability is a triggered ability. When a triggered ability is put onto the stack, there is a round of priority before it resolves. In this case, when Archangel Avacyn  Flip's ETB is put onto the stack, it does not have indestructible yet. There is a round of priority where players can kill her because her ETB triggered ability has not resolved yet.

In case you are wondering how this differs from the original post and Boza's answer. Once you begin to resolve Collective Brutality 's effect (in this case the part where target player reveals their hand), the effect on the stack is resolving. During the resolution of a spell or ability, no player has priority.
