if i have Omniscience on the battlefield and Maelstrom Nexus and i play the first spell for the turn since Omniscience says i can play can i use Maelstrom Nexus ability to cascade

Maelstrom Nexus is an older card, and as such has some out dated wording.

To play something and to cast something are essentially the same thing. (Except when it comes to lands) Nowadays, "to play" something has been errata'd to "to cast" something. Gatherer has the updated text for all Magic cards, and if you search up Maelstrom Nexus, you'll find it's oracle text now says:

"The first spell you cast each turn has cascade."
