Phantom Steed and Yarok

Asked by Opiumtest5 2 years ago

How does the new card Phantom Steed work with Yarok, the Desecrated ? Specifically about getting the ETB triggers twice. You'd be exiling two creatures thanks to Yarok giving you an extra ETB trigger, but what happens when you then attack with Phantom Steed. Would you get only one copy token, or two? And if it's only one, which of the two exiled creatures would you get? The wording doesn't make it very clear to me.

Going off rule 406.6., albeit mildly tangentially: An object may have one ability printed on it that causes one or more cards to be exiled, and another ability that refers either to “the exiled cards” or to cards “exiled with [this object].” These abilities are linked: the second refers only to cards that have been exiled due to the first. See rule 607, “Linked Abilities.”, we may assume that when a card refers to "the exiled [card]", it means any and all cards exiled with it by its first ability--so when Yarok comes into the equation, it ostensibly means Phantom Steed can create two tokens with its attack trigger... PROVIDED you've exiled two separate cards with its first, via Yarok.

No assumptions necessary. 607.3 clearly states what happens in this scenario.

607.3. If, within a pair of linked abilities, one ability refers to a single object as “the exiled card,” “a card exiled with [this card],” or a similar phrase, and the other ability has exiled multiple cards (usually because it was copied), the ability refers to each of the exiled cards. If that ability asks for any information about the exiled card, such as a characteristic or mana value, it gets multiple answers. If these answers are used to determine the value of a variable, the sum of the answers is used. If that ability performs any actions on “the” card, it performs that action on each exiled card. If that ability performs any actions on “a” card, the controller of the ability chooses which card is affected.
