Paradox engine vs artifact lands.

Asked by K34 7 years ago

I played cards tonight with a guy who adamantly insisted that Paradox Engine would untap his artifact lands like Seat of the Synod because they are artifacts in addition to being lands. Obviously I disagree, but he claims a judge told him this. Can someone give me a rules reference for him?

There is no rules reference to give you because the relevant text here isn't in the comprehensive rules, but rather on the card itself. Paradox Engine very clearly states "nonland" permanents, and Seat of the Synod very clearly says the word "land".

The best I can give you is rule 205.1:

205.1. The type line is printed directly below the illustration. It contains the card’s card type(s). It also contains the card’s subtype(s) and supertype(s), if applicable.
We can see that Seat of the Synod is a land because the type line tells us it is a land.

Paradox Engine states nonland permanents.

Seat of the Synod has the land subtype. Therefore it is not "nonland".

Wizards hasn't defined the prefix "non" for magic because the Oxford Dictionary defines it perfectly well as "Not of the kind or class described". Nonland means, according to the English language "not a land".

If you want an official ruling on the definition of the prefix "non" here you go
