Obsidian Fireheart Rulings

Asked by Hjaltrohir 9 years ago

I know it is a bit of a dumb question but how does Obsidian Fireheart work?

Well, it is pretty simple. A land with a blaze counter, at the beginning of that land controler's upkeep, will deal 1 damage to that player.

The gatherer explains this with the following ruling:

"10/1/2009 The ability gained by the land triggers at the beginning of the upkeep of the land's controller, not the beginning of the upkeep of Obsidian Fireheart's controller. The player who controls the land at the time the ability triggers is the one who's dealt damage."

  1. When you activate the ability, you put a blaze counter on target land.
  2. For as long as that counter remains on that land, that land gains the described ability: "At the beginning of your upkeep, this land deals 1 damage to you". "your" and "you" in this ability refer to the land's controller (presumably your opponent, because why would you put this on your lands).
  3. From that point on, at the beginning of the upkeep of any player who controls such land, this ablility will go onto the stack, and deal 1 damage to that player when it resolves.
