O-Naginata and creatures with power temporarily 3 or greater.

Asked by StopShot 7 years ago

Suppose I have a Darklit Gargoyle or a Plated Geopede and I activate either of their abilities so they have at least 3 power. Then I equip either of them with O-Naginata since they meet the 3 power requirement. Will this equipment unattach from either creature at the end of my turn when either of the creatures lose their +2 power buff? Thanks for the help!

See that O-Naginata's second ability automatically fulfills its first ability. The +3/+0 it grants will give the creature the minimum power required to stay equipped. All you will need is to have a creature that already has power 3 or greater (either base power or a temporary buff) but once it's equipped, it will stay equipped.

So, when you equip it to your Darklit Gargoyle that has its buff, it'll be a 6/1 until end of turn where it will lose the +2/-1 and become a 4/2 (still getting the +3/+0).

Note also that Darklit Gargoyle's ability is indeed an activated ability, but Plated Geopede's ability is not. It's ability is a triggered ability that triggers whenever a land enters the battlefield under your control.

@Raging_Squiggle, Thank you so much for your help. I have one last question though.

If I was to give Char-Rumbler +4 power from its ability and then equip the O-Naginata to it, would the equipment unattach from the creature at the end of turn?

If you gave it +4/+0, it would be a 3/3 and therefore a valid creature to be equipped with O-Naginata. However, at the end of the turn, its +4/+0 buff ends and it ends up being a 2/3. (-1 power and +3 buff).

Because of this, O-Naginata becomes unattached the next time state based actions are checked, as stated in O-Naginata's Gatherer page:

6/1/2005 O-Naginata becomes unattached if the equipped creatures power is less than 3 as state-based actions are checked.
