Nashi, Moon Sage's Scion and X-cost spells

Asked by CamraMaan 1 year ago

When Nashi, Moon Sage's Scion exiles a card from each player's library, since you aren't casting the card for free, should I assume I can pay any amount of life for X in an X-cost spell...?

We can use Death Denied as a simple example.

Also, would I be able to cast Consume Spirit with it and pay life for X...? Or am I strictly limited to paying X with black mana?

X would be zero. Nashi's ability gives you an alternative cost for casting the spell ("pay life equal to its mana value rather than paying its mana cost"). When you pay an alternative cost that doesn't specifically include , the value of X defaults to 0.

107.3b If a player is casting a spell that has an {X} in its mana cost, the value of X isn’t defined by the text of that spell, and an effect lets that player cast that spell while paying neither its mana cost nor an alternative cost that includes X, then the only legal choice for X is 0. This doesn’t apply to effects that only reduce a cost, even if they reduce it to zero. See rule 601, “Casting Spells.”
