Narset vs Trinisphere
Asked by MrWar 9 years ago
I'm having a discussion with a fellow Narset, Enlightened Master player about the interaction between her attack trigger (exile top 4 cards of library and play non-creatures without paying mana cost) and Trinisphere
Does the Narset player have to pay (3) for each exiled spell they wish to play due to trinisphere?

@Enyeto: That's incorrect.
Trinisphere looks at the final cost of the spell, including alternate casting costs, cost increases, additional costs, and cost reductions. If the cost of the spell would be less than three mana, you must still pay three mana. This includes spells cast without paying their mana costs.
If a spell you would cast with Narset, Enlightened Master's ability would cost less than three mana to cast, you still have to pay three mana for it.

No. Narset, Enlightened Master's ability states you may cast it without paying its mana cost. Trinisphere only adjusts the cost on spells with CMC 0. 1 and 2 to cost at least 3 mana to cast.
Regardless if you were casting Mind Sculpt from Narest's exile trigger, the CMC if you paid for it would be 3, but Narset's trigger also allows you to cast Mind Sculpt from exile without paying its mana costs (including or excluding cost manipulation). You will still have to pay additional costs like kickers as normal.
