Mystic Reflection vs Purphoros, God of the Forge

Asked by QuirkyQU33FER 2 years ago

can i use Mystic Reflection to change a Purphoros, God of the Forge into something else? not sure how this interaction works since Purphoros, God of the Forge isnt a creature when in enters but is one on the cast

If your devotion to red is less than 5, you'll ignore replacement effects like Mystic Reflection while Purphoros, God of the Forge is entering. Somewhat counterintuitively, you'll only look at permanents that already exist for this purpose, so of your devotion is 4, you'll ignore Mystic Reflection even though it will be a creature when it enters (and even trigger enter the battlefield abilities for being a creature).

I'm actually not sure if you count itself toward devotion for replacement effects, I may be thinking of an earlier iteration of the rules. If your devotion counting it is too low though, Mystic Reflection certainly doesn't apply.

Initial thought still seems to be correct, at least as of last year, and I found this ruling to support the whole answer in the Theros Beyond Death release notes:

As a God enters the battlefield, your devotion to its color will determine whether any replacement effects that affect creatures entering the battlefield apply to that God. Because replacement effects are considered before the God is on the battlefield, the mana symbols in its mana cost won't be counted when determining this.
