Multiplayer Lifelink Question

Asked by Colten_Lee 9 years ago

Okay, so me and my friend had an argument about this recently. 4 player game. I have a Serra Avatar and 52 life. It's enchanted with Lifelink. I attack opponent A, who is at 6 life, and they cannot block it. So do I gain the full 52 life, or just 6? He said 6 bc my opponent only takes 6 damage and stops at 0. I say 52 bc creature don't deal just partial damage, right?? It all has to be assigned.

Unless something is preventing the damage Serra Avatar will assign all of its damage and you will gain that much life. This is why you get nothing when blocked by a 0/100 creature with protection, but everything from a 1/1. Players can go into negative life totals, many cards and the rules are worded as "0 or less life" meaning their life totals can be a value lower than zero. Effects that cannot lower someone's life to below zero explicitly say so and are the exception, not the rule. See: Drain Life.

118.6 If a player has 0 or less life, that player loses the game as a state-based action. See rule 704.
