Mizzix and X-cost spells

Asked by SaucedButLeaking 8 years ago

I'm building an EDH deck with Mizzix of the Izmagnus as its general. Say I have 1 experience counter (no other cost reduction), and cast Banefire for 3 mana (X=2). What does Mizzix see the cost of the spell as when checking to see if I get an experience counter?

When you cast a spell with X in its cost, you first declare the value of X. Cost calculations are based on the value you declare for X; the value of X is not determined by how much mana you pay.

Generally, is 0 for determining converted mana costs. However, for a spell on the stack, is whatever value was chosen for X. If you cast Banefire with X=2, then Banefire's CMC is 3.

From the time you announce the value of x of a spell while casting it, till the spell leaves the stack (either by resolving, being countered, or other means) the converted mana cost includes the value of x.

So mizzix whatever value you chose for x. Even if the spells cost is reduced by something like Seal of the Guildpact, the CMC does not change
