Mizzium Meddler interactions with Abzan

Asked by EssTea 8 years ago

I just want to make sure I'm getting everything right about Mizzium Meddler, the rulings are so complicated. Here they are :

  1. If changing one target of a spell or ability to Mizzium Meddler would make other targets of that spell or ability illegal, the targets remain unchanged.
  2. If the spell or ability has multiple instances of the word target, you choose which target youre changing to Mizzium Meddler as Mizium Meddlers ability resolves.
  3. The target of the spell or ability wont change unless Mizzium Meddler fulfills all the targeting criteria. If a spell or ability has multiple targets, such as Send to Sleep, you can change only one of the targets to Mizzium Meddler.
  4. If a spell or ability has a variable number of targets, you cant change the number of targets.
  5. If Mizzium Meddler leaves the battlefield before its ability resolves, the targets remain unchanged.
  6. Mizzium Meddlers triggered ability can target a spell or ability even if Mizzium Meddler wouldn't be a legal target for that spell or ability. However, the target of that spell or ability will remain unchanged.
  7. If Mizzium Meddlers triggered ability targets a spell or ability with no targets, nothing happens.

Situation 1 : Lets say opponent casts Dromoka's Command choosing put a +1/+1 counter and target creature fights another creature, if I flash Mizzium Meddler I can only choose one of the two modes because of ruling number 2 and 3?

Situation 2 : I'm having trouble understanding the ability clause of Mizzium Meddler. Let's say opp levels up his Warden of the First Tree, can I cahnge the ability to the Meddler. What about Fleecemane Lion and monstrosity?

Situation 3 : Opponent casts Abzan Charm on a legal target, I flash Mizzium Meddler. From ruling number 6 Abzan Charm would resolve on the legal target and wouldn't fizzle on mizzium meddler?

Thanks for explanations and any additional insight on the card!

Sorry for the weird formatting of the rulings, don't know what happened.

1) Yes, you can change only one target:
Dromoka's Command has two instances of target and
Rule number 2 says you choose which one you want to change

2) You can't change target of those spells, because they don't target anything.

3) Yes, you can change target of that spell to Dromoka's Command(rule 6) and because it will be illegal target, nothing will happen.

Situation 1 - Yes, Mizzium Meddler can only change one instance of target to itself. It can also only change the target successfully of what it's a legal target for. So you could only every make Mizzium Meddler get the +1/+1 or the fight target.

Situation 2 - Nothing would happen. Mizzium Meddler, neither of them target with their abilities. Whenever a ability references its name it essentially saying "itself" not target this creature.

Situation 3 - Yes, basically Mizzium Meddler can try to make itself the target, but if it's not a legal target the spell or ability resolves normally. This allows you to do stuff on the stack to otherwise make it a legal target if need be.

Fixed the formatting. Don't put spaces before lines.

Remember that a spell or ability only targets something if it uses the word "target."

Remember also that Mizzium Meddler's ability only checks whether Mizzium Meddler would be a legal choice for the target change when the ability resolves. Until that point, you can take other actions to change whether Mizzium Meddler would be a legal target. Note that if Mizzium Meddler is not a legal target, then the target remains unchanged (even if the current target is illegal).
