Mirage Mirror and a triggered ability?

Asked by belugawhaleonthefloor 6 years ago

So let's say I have a Torrential Gearhulk out and a Mirage Mirror. Can I activate Mirage Mirror, targeting the gearhulk, allowing me to cast an instant/sorcery for free every single turn if I keep making the mirror a copy of gearhulk? Plus what about other triggered abilities in general? Because it says whenever 'this' enters the battlefield, but technically Mirage Mirror is already on the battlefield.

You're right to point out that Mirage Mirror is already on the battlefield. When you use the Mirror's ability it doesn't re-enter the battlefield, it just gets a new set of characteristics. It won't trigger any abilities that look for something entering the battlefield. You won't get to cast another instant from your graveyard in your example.

This doesn't work the way you want it to. Whenever an existing object becomes a copy of something, it doesn't re-enter the battlefield. If you want to have repeatable Clone effects that trigger ETBs, you want Mercurial Pretender.

Triggered abilities only trigger when the requirements are fulfilled, and in this case, that requirement is the permanent entering the battlefield from another zone.

Rip ok. But I'm trying to make a standard deck so I couldn't use Mercurial Pretender. I could use Vizier of Many Faces, and then I'd be able to copy gearhulks ability correct?

Yes, that works because Vizier of Many Faces would be a Torrential Gearhulk at the time it enters the battlefield.
