Metallurgic Summonings and Torrential Gearhulk interaction.

Asked by TheGodofNight 7 years ago

I had a Metallurgic Summonings on the field, I cast Torrential Gearhulk, it resolved, and I selected Grip of Desolation from my graveyard. I believe this creates a 6/6 construct token. My opponent says that since the cost I paid was zero, that I get a zero construct. Can you please clarify and provide relevant ruling reference. Thanks in advance.

The CMC of a spell is always what is printed on the card itself. The only variable in CMC is if the card requires that you pay (when being cast out of the graveyard, you would be required to make =0). In your given situation, even though you cast Desolation for "free", its CMC is still 6.

Rule:

  • 202.3. The converted mana cost of an object is a number equal to the total amount of mana in its mana cost, regardless of color.

Gatherer on Gearhulk:

  • If the card has Variable Colorless in its mana cost, you must choose 0 as the value of X when casting it without paying its mana cost.
