Managorger Hydra and Hardened Scales, casting

Asked by Bovine073 8 years ago

If I have a Managorger Hydra on the battlefield and cast my Hardened Scales from my hand, I do NOT get an extra +1/+1 counter, correct?

I guess the ability on the hydra triggers before the scales because it is not an ETB effect.

If hydra had an ETB effect, would I get an extra counter?

Thanks

Your first statement is indeed correct. Hardened Scales has a replacement effect that is only active while it is on the battlefield. As the Hydra triggers when a spell is cast, the Scales is still on the stack when the counter is placed on the Hydra. If it was an ETB effect (like if it was worded whenever a nonland permanent enters the battlefield), you would put two counters on it because the replacement effect would be active when the trigger resolves.

Couldnt you cast the hardened scales then the managorger to get the 2 +1/+1 counters?
