Manabarbs & Divine Deflection
Asked by bjb119 9 years ago
Let's say I have 1 Manabarbs in play, and I tap lands for XW in order to play Divine Deflection. When I tap those lands, is the damage from Manabarbs dealt to me instantaneously as I tap each land, or does it go on the stack; can I redirect the Manabarbs damage to my opponent with the Divine Deflection?
So if I float the mana, then cast Divine Deflection with that floated mana, I can prevent the damage, and then Divine Deflection could deal the damage to an opponent, is that correct?

Note that Divine Deflection doesn't create a redirection effect.
It depends.
The damage is part of a triggered ability, but it isn't part of a mana ability. Therefore, it isn't instantaneous; it uses the stack.
If you float mana prior to initiating the casting process, you'll trigger Manabarbs's ability, and the instances will go onto the stack. You can respond by casting Divine Deflection, which will resolve first and prevent the burn from the abilities.
If you tap the lands during the casting process, then the ability will trigger and go onto the stack above the spell, so you won't be able to prevent it.
