Mairsil, the Pretender rules? It involves Mairsil, Dreams of the Dead, and Crosis's Attendant

Asked by MarloweH 6 years ago

Set up:Crosis's Attendant exiled with cage counter Dreams of the Dead on the battlefield

Interaction Question:If i tried to sacrifice mairsil to get the Red, Black, and Blue mana, and pay to bring back mairsil. How many times could i do that? Can you send the commander to the graveyard instead of exile?

Also if this does not work, suggestions on something to replace would be great. I would like to find a way to flicker Mairsil on command.

You can do that.

Putting your commander in the command zone is a replacement effect that lets you choose to replace your commander going to your graveyard, exile, or library with it going to the commander zone instead. You can choose not to put it there and just have it die instead.

You can't, however, let this happen more than once, because of Dreams of the Dead's exile clause putting it in exile (or command zone) after the first time you bring it back.

Ok thanks, Do you have any ideas of something that could replace dreams of the dead?

There really aren't any 1 card replacements and with Mairsil being a human you can't even do 2 card replacements with Mikaeus, the Unhallowed and caging something else to remove the counters.

What are you trying to do exactly?

If you want a way to cage multiple cards, Deadeye Navigator works pretty well (you can't cage it though).

Caging Gilded Lotus with Deadeye and a haste generator out (Fervor, Anger, Blighted Bat caged, etc.) will give you infinite mana and cages.

Of course, if you're just trying to win, the simplest way is just to cage Mirror-Mad Phantasm, mill your library, and flashback Dread Return for the win.

If you bring Mairsil back with Dreams of the Dead and then 'Blink' him by some other effect (like say you've caged a AEtherling with him already) then you can do this, and the new instance of Mairsil that returns to play no longer has this restriction.

Rulings 10/4/2004 This is a replacement effect. **_

10/1/2008 If a creature returned to the battlefield with Dreams of the Dead would leave the battlefield for any reason, it's exiled instead — unless the spell or ability that's causing the creature to leave the battlefield is actually trying to exile it! In that case, it succeeds at exiling it. If it later returns the creature card to the battlefield (as Oblivion Ring or Flickerwisp might, for example), the creature card will return to the battlefield as a new object with no relation to its previous existence.

_** 4/15/2013 If a permanent has multiple instances of cumulative upkeep, each triggers separately. However, the age counters are not connected to any particular ability; each cumulative upkeep ability will count the total number of age counters on the permanent at the time that ability resolves.
