Magister Sphinx to save myself?

Asked by CoryDean 8 years ago

If someone swings for a lethal unblockable 1000 or so damage, can I flash in or Cloudshift Magister Sphinx to save myself?

No.

Combat damage is assigned and dealt, then state-based actions are checked. You'll die before you have a chance to cast Cloudshift.

If you cast Cloudshift before the combat damage step, you'll just set your life total to 10 and then die horribly.

That's what I was afraid of. Just wishful thinking. Thank you.

EDIT: Aw, I'm too slow, lol.

Nope. Thing is, you'd go to 10 life, but then the damage would happen after, thus killing you. You could block though--assuming you haven't gone below 0 already.

A good little read on the issue.

Basically if you've been dealt the damage--your life is below 0 (strange Phyrexian Unlife type effects aside)--the game is over. This play won't bring your life back up so to speak. Angel's Grace could help you out.
