Ludevic, Necrogenius  Flip and Dark Impostor

Asked by unspeakablerage 2 years ago

When Ludevic transforms into Olag:

“As this creature transforms into Olag, Ludevic's Hubris, it becomes a copy of a creature card exiled with it, except its name is Olag, Ludevic's Hubris, it's 4/4, and it's a legendary blue and black Zombie in addition to its other colors and types. Put a number of +1/+1 counters on Olag equal to the number of creature cards exiled with it.”

Say I exiled three creatures to Ludevic’s ability, and one of those was Dark Impostor. Part of its card text reads:

“Dark Impostor has all activated abilities of all creature cards exiled with it.”

So my question is: since Olag is considered to be a copy of Dark Imposter, does that mean that Olag has all activated abilities of not only Dark Impostor but also any associated with the other two cards that were exiled with Olag?

In your example, Olag, Ludevic's Hubris won't have the abilities from the other exiled creatures. This is because both Olag and Dark Impostor use special kinds of abilities called "Linked Abilities". Linked abilities on one card are only linked to each other, and if they're given to another card they won't take information from abilities of that other card. The second Impostor ability only considers creatures exiled with the first Impostor ability. It won't consider the cards exiled by Ludevic, Necrogenius  Flip's ability (Ludevic and Olag are the same game object).

Here are the relevant rules references:
607.1. An object may have two abilities printed on it such that one of them causes actions to be taken or objects or players to be affected and the other one directly refers to those actions, objects, or players. If so, these two abilities are linked: the second refers only to actions that were taken or objects or players that were affected by the first, and not by any other ability.
607.2a If an object has an activated or triggered ability printed on it that instructs a player to exile one or more cards and an ability printed on it that refers either to "the exiled cards" or to cards "exiled with [this object]," these abilities are linked. The second ability refers only to cards in the exile zone that were put there as a result of an instruction to exile them in the first ability.

I had a similar question a while ago. It was a very disappointing ruling to find out.
