Living Death + Death's Presence

Asked by Skalle_the_Reckless 9 years ago

Suppose I cast Living Death while Death's Presence is on the battlefield. As long as I sacrifice creatures and have creatures enter the battlefield, will Death's Presence allow me to put counters on the new creatures?

In general, if a spell or ability triggers more abilities, will those abilities resolve during or after the initial spell or ability resolves?

Nothing can resolve during the resolution of another spell or ability. Things like replacement effects can apply, but triggered abilities wait until after it has fully resolved before they go on the stack. Due to this you can have fun.

Each creature you sacrifice does die and trigger death's presence. These triggers wait until after Living Death fully resolves before going on the stack. When they go on the stack is when you chose targets and, what's this, your new creatures are on the field.

I'm not an expert but I don't think this will work the way you want it to. When all your creatures are sacrificed from Living Death this will trigger Death's Presence but there will be no targets (creatures you control) at that time and the effect will do nothing. Death's Presence will look for a target and find none.

To make this work you need something like Rage Thrower which deals damage when creatures die but it means Death's Presence is irrelevant. Maybe if you had a creature with Undying like Flayer of the Hatebound or with Persist like Murderous Redcap I think it could work. You could stack the triggers so it dies then Persist/Undying triggers in time for the counters to go on but I'm not 100% sure on that.

Again, I'm not an expert but this is what I think would happen...
