Lion's Eye Diamond and Split-Second

Asked by BlueScope 7 years ago

If a player (for example) casts Krosan Grip on my Lion's Eye Diamond (LED), can I activate the LED's ability in response?

My reasoning that I would be is that Split-Second doesn't prevent mana abilities from being activated, and LED's ability is a mana ability. It's restriction to only cast it when I could cast an instant prevents me from activating it while paying costs for a spell I'm casting, but since I get priority even when a spell with Split-Second is on the stack, I should be perfectly fine activating it as normal.

Is there anything wrong with the above explanation, or did I miss anything? Thanks in advance!

The ability is a mana ability, so it isn't affected by split second. The phrase "any time you could cast an instant" just means any time you have priority; it does not mean that you're casting an instant. Effects that change when you could cast an instant do not change the meaning of the phrase "when you could cast an instant."
