Liege of the Tangle Aurelia the Warleader help please!

Asked by cityslicker 8 years ago

Hello okay here the combo I'm not too sure about. I have this in my Child of Alara EDH deck.

Liege of the Tangle and Aurelia, the Warleader are in play and they attack. Aurelia says I can untap all my creatures but does that apply to the land creatures I would make the second Liege of the Tangle deals damage? Once I've dealt damage any number of lands I choose get an awakening counter and it becomes an 8/8 elemental creature. Would Aurelia be able to untap those creatures that turn?

Not sure how the stack works here with when a creature attacks and when a creature deals damage. Thanks in advance!

I don't see why it wouldn't work. I haven't looked into any rulings or anything and I'm not a judge, but I'd say the language on both spells is pretty clear. I'm fairly confident, yes, Aurelia will untap land creatures.

If the lands do not have an awakening counter on them at the time that Aurelia, the Warleader is declared as an attacker, they will not untap.

At the time you declare attacking creatures they don't even tap yet. They don't tap until after blockers are declared (I do believe)

Declare combat -> response step -> Declare attackers (triggering Aurelia) -> response step -> opponent declares blockers -> response step -> decide how damage is dealt -> deal damage (liege triggers)

Wow. I'm embarrassed for not reading the question more closely.

I hope I didn't get your hopes up too much. No, the combo won't work in one turn. Liege of the Tangle doesn't give the counters until damage is dealt, which is after Aurelia, the Warleader has been declared as an attacker.

Ok to be clear about how combat works here are the steps in order and what would happen on each step in your scenario. Players receive priority during each step so both players must pass over an empty stack before advancing to the next step.

  • Beginning of Combat step.

  • Declare Attackers step. As a turn based action at the beginning of this step creatures are declared as attackers and creatures without vigilance are tapped. During this turn based action Aurelia, the Warleader will trigger and the ability will wait to be put on the stack. After attackers are declared players receive priority and the trigger is put on the stack. Creatures will be untapped when the trigger resolves before moving to the next step.

  • Declare Blockers step.

  • Combat Damage step. Combat damage is dealt as a turn based action at the beginning of the step and Liege of the Tangle will trigger and wait to be put on the stack. Players receive priority and the ability goes on the stack. When the ability resolves you can put the awaking counters on lands and they will become creatures.

  • End of Combat step.

Damn that sucks. But thank you for clearing up how the combat step works for me. Things sure get confusing! I'll just have to wait a turn for my land creatures.

Thanks again guys!
