Lazav the Multifarious- Do Keywords Stack?

Asked by GorehoundABB 5 years ago

I understand that Lazav, the Multifarious copies the exact traits of the card it copies from its power toughness keywords and abilities.

But do the keywords stack with every copy?

Ie. If Lazav copies a creature with hexproof and unblockable would those traits carry over to the next copy?

If not would I have to proceed to switch up creatures within the combat step to fully abuse his ability?

Ie copy a creature with unblockable during combat and when blocks have been declared, switch to another creature before combat damage step?

When an object copies another object it becomes exactly the second thing with any exceptions noted by the copy ability. Lazav maintains only his own name, the legendary supertype, and the copy ability when he copies a new object, because that is all he says he keeps. You could copy a creature with evasion and then copy another creature that is larger after blocks if you wanted.

The keywords do not stack - Lazav will only be a copy of the card you are currently copying.

So, if you are trying to make use of unblockable, your Lazav would have to copy an unblockable creature, then, after blockers are declared, but before damage, you’d copy your damage-dealing creature.

I would recommend Phyrexian Dreadnought as your copy target. Paying to copy 12/12 worth of stats is a great bargain. You can also dump it into the graveyard easily by casting it and sacrificing it. Note, because Lazav is already on the battlefield, Dreadnaught’s enter the battlefied ability will not trigger when it is copied.

I thought as much. Thanks for your answer. I guess the only exception to this is if Lazav copies a creature that has an activated ability granting a keyword. I guess then in that instance keywords would carry over to the next copy.

Phyrexian Dreadnought is already in the deck. It was the first card to get in. I'm looking for more creatures like it stats wise to complete a creature package for this build.

Scryfall says there are 7 creatures with 8 or greater power for less than 5 mana (so 4 mana or less, IDK why I decided to do one greater or equal and the other less). Only 3 of them would be good in the deck, but Eater of Days and Phyrexian Soulgorger would be good in addition to Phyrexian Dreadnought.
