Lazav The Multifarious and ... a couple questions

Asked by californiabluewolf 5 years ago

I have a couple of questions for using Lazav, the Multifarious and things that may happen in game.

1) When Lazav is copying a creature can another lazav be on the field without triggering the legend rule?

2) if Lazav copies a god of Theros such as Athreos, God of Passage but Lazavs controller has less than 7 devotion to Black and White... what exactly happens to Lazav?

  1. No. According to the legend rule if a player controls two or more legendary permanents with the same name, that player chooses one of them, and the rest are put into their owners' graveyards. Even though your first Lazav has the copied creature's traits, it's also still a Legendary creature named Lazav, the Multifarious, so a second one entering the battlefield under your control will cause the legend rule to come into effect.

  2. When copying a card that references itself by name, such as Athreos, God of Passage in its devotion text, replace instances of the copied card's name with the copying creature's name. In this case, that line would effectively read, "As long as your devotion to white and black is less than seven, Lazav isn't a creature." Lazav will be an indestructible Legendary Enchantment - God with a triggered ability, and if you do manage to get devotion up to seven, it will also be a 5/4 creature.

I should add that cards like Lazav, the Multifarious, Lazav, Dimir Mastermind, and Sakashima the Impostor, which copy another creature but don't change names, are good for copying Legendary creatures since they retain their own name. This means if your Lazav is copying Athreos and you play another Athreos, the legend rule won't come into effect.

Also worth noting, as you brought up devotion, copy effects copy the mana cost as well, so they will count towards the appropriate devotion rather than their original.
