Kresh the blood braided and retribution of the ancients

Asked by Deckologist 7 years ago

If I have a Kresh the Bloodbraided and Retribution of the Ancients on the field and I use the counters off of Kresh to give a creature -1 counters using retribution does kresh get the counters from killing that creature? example:

kresh has 6 counters on him.

use 4 of those counters to kill a 4/4 creature.

does kresh get 4 +1+1 counters?

No, it doesn't work out that way. In your example the targeted creature is a 0/0 when it dies, which means Kresh's ability will give him 0 +1/+1 counters.

Note that Retribution of the Ancients doesn't give -1/-1 counters, it just gives a temporary -X/-X to the targeted creature. This detail can matter in certain situations involving other cards and mechanics.
