Knight of the Reliquary + Mosswort Bridge + Enlightened Tutor

Asked by Andromedus 8 years ago

I'm trying to figure out if Knight of the Reliquary can be used to tutor up Mosswort Bridge in conjunction with using Enlightened Tutor to tutor up a card like Blightsteel Colossus, so that the Mosswort Bridge then exiles the Blightsteel Colossus.

My concern is with all the deck shuffling. Knight of the Reliquary causes a shuffle, but is that before or after the Mosswort Bridge checks the top four cards? Since the Bridge comes into play immediately, wouldn't the card check occur before the shuffle? In any case, is there a time when Enlightened Tutor could be played in order to get the Blightsteel Colossus to the top at the right moment to cause Mosswort Bridge to find it? When would that be?

Thank you!

It works.

The Knight's ability has shuffling as part of its resolution - the shuffling doesn't happen later. After Knight of the Reliquary resolves, Mosswort Bridge comes into play and its ability triggers (it contains the keyword "when" indicating a trigger).

The trigger uses the stack, so you can respond to it. In response to the Bridge's trigger, you play Enlightened Tutor and put Blightsteel Colossus where you want it. When Mosswort Bridge's trigger then resolves, the Colossus is on top of the library.

Current text of Hideaway is this I think, I added emphasis as it is slightly different from how the card is printed:
- 702.74a Hideaway represents a static ability and a triggered ability. Hideaway means This permanent enters the battlefield tapped and When this permanent enters the battlefield, look at the top four cards of your library. Exile one of them face down and put the rest on the bottom of your library in any order. The exiled card gains Any player who has controlled the permanent that exiled this card may look at this card in the exile zone.

The part of Hideaway that lets you look at cards and exile one of them is a triggered ability. The reminder text helpfully starts that part with "When", which is one of the words that indicates a triggered ability (the others are "whenever" and "at"). A triggered ability can trigger in the middle of another spell or ability resolving, but it waits to be put onto the stack until after that spell or ability is finished resolving.

So in your example, you search up Mosswort Bridge with Knight of the Reliquary. The Bridge triggers but you have to finish resolving Knight's ability first before the trigger can start doing anything. After you're done shuffling, the Hideaway trigger will go onto the stack, and you can respond to it by casting Enlightened Tutor. Your idea works.

Short answer, yes, it works. You just have to cast your instant at the right time.

Basically you can do things like this:

  1. You tap Knight of the Reliquary and sacrifice a Forest or Plains to activate its ability. Assuming nobody responds, the ability begins resolving.
  2. You search your library for Mosswort Bridge and put it onto the batlefield. The Hideaway ability on Bridge triggers, but is not put on the stack yet as another ability is still resolving.
  3. You finish resolving the Knight of the Reliquary ability by shuffling your library.
  4. The game now attempts to give you priority, but notices a trigger is waiting to be put on the stack. The game puts the Hideaway trigger on the stack, then gives you priority.
  5. At this point you cast Enlightened Tutor. Assuming no response, it resolves and safely deposits your One-Shot Robot on top of the library. This all happens with the Hideaway trigger on the stack.
  6. After another round of priority passes the Hideaway trigger begins resolving and reveals the cards on top of the library (including Blightsteel Colossus). You finish resolving it as normal.

This can work, but you have to cast Enlightened Tutor at the right time. This is the order:

Activate Knight of the Reliquary sac'ing a Forest or Plains, it goes on the stack.

Assuming no one else does anything, it resolves, and you put Mosswort Bridge on the battlefield.

MB's triggered ability (Hideaway) goes on the stack.

Because it's an instant, you can cast Enlightened Tutor before MB's trigger resolves, putting Blightsteel Colossus on top of your library.

MB's trigger then resolves with BC on top of your library.
