Killing Gideon Jura as a creature

Asked by cheezyfoot11 9 years ago

If I use Gideon Jura's +0 ability to turn him into a creature, and I have Aegis of the Gods out, can somebody burn off (say with unprevenable Banefire) or kill my Gideon with a spell? Gatherer says that Aegis of the Gods protects you as well as your planeswalkers you control (gives them hexproof) because damage to a planesalker goes to the defending player then is redirected to your planeswalker, but Gideon's +0 turns him into a creature, so I'm not sure if he would still have hexproof. Then for killing him with a kill spell, say Murder, could somebody do that? Because his +0 turns him into a creature that is still a planeswalker, so would him being a planeswalker make him an illegal target for Murder?

When Gideon Jura is a creature, he is able to be targeted directly by Murder. The reason he had hexproof before is because when I player chooses to Banefire a planeswalker, it is not direct damage. They must target you and redirect the damage to the walker. However, in the case of Murder, the creature is the direct target.

The reason why the Aegis protects your walkers is the nature of using burn spells on a planeswalker.

When you cast something like Lightning Bolt targeting a player, you can choose to redirect the damage to the planeswalker instead. If the player has Hexproof, there's no way for the damage to be redirected from the player to the walker because the burn spell can never target the player.

However, if Gideon becomes a creature, burning him would do nothing anyway because his 0 prevents him from taking damage. But since he becomes a creature, he can be targeted by anything that targets a creature like Murder.
