Kiki-Jiki and Creatures Without Haste

Asked by DemonDragonJ 3 years ago

If a player uses Kiki-Jiki, Mirror Breaker to copy a creature that does not naturally have haste (such as Storm Crow, for example), and then uses the populate mechanic to copy that token, will the second token have haste? Also, will the second token need to be sacrificed at the end of the turn?

Hmmm. This is actually a good question. I’m not a judge by any means but yes, the token will have haste, because that was a property granted to it.

The sacrifice effect is a status effect that only effects the first one.

If it was worded like “It has “sacrifice this at the beginning of the next end step” or it gains..... then yes.

The Populated token will not have Haste. You will not have to sacrifice the Populated token, though.

Small differences in wording here are very important. Kiki-Jiki (roughly) says "Make a token copy. That token has Haste." This does except what it says. It makes a copy of your creature and then gives it Haste. In other words, the Haste ability is not part of the token's copiable values (i.e. it is not intrinsic to the token). For that to be the case, Kiki-Jiki would need to say "Make a token copy expect it has Haste." much like Heat Shimmer does.

Hope this helps!!

According to askamagicjudge.com, the copied token will have haste.

The oracle text of Kiki-Jiki, Mirror Breaker says “except it has haste.”

Good catch, Daveslab2022. I even pulled up the Scryfall page for Kiki-Jiki... and only looked at the originally printed text...

With the errata-ed text, the token with have its copiable values changed to include Haste.

Tylord2894, that is very good to know, as I am contemplating making an EDH deck with Ghired, Conclave Exile as the general and Kiki-Jiki as another creature in that deck.
