Kaya, the Inexorable +1 on Esika's Charriot

Asked by MrGeor 3 years ago

The situation is the following. I have a Kaya, the Inexorable, an Esika's Chariot, and 2x 2/2 cat tokens (from Esika's Chariot) on the board. I crew the Chariot to make it a 4/4 creature. Since the Chariot is a legal target now for Kaya's +1 ability (targets only creatures), I proceed to apply Kaya's +1 effect on the Chariot. I then end my turn. My opponent uses an artifact destruction spell on my Chariot, destroying it. What happens to the Chariot in terms of Kaya's +1 ability that targeted it as a creature previously?

Although Kaya the Inexorable grants the ability "When this creature dies or is put into exile, return it to its owner's hand and create a 1/1 white Spirit creature token with flying." what it really means is "When this object is put into the graveyard or into exile [...]" so it will still trigger if the object is no longer a creature when it leaves the battlefield.

Just adding the relevant ruling for Neotrup:

700.7. If an ability of an object uses a phrase such as “this [something]” to identify an object, where [something] is a characteristic, it is referring to that particular object, even if it isn’t the appropriate characteristic at the time.
