Jeleva and 101.4a

Asked by ZendikariWol 3 years ago

This is Jeleva, Nephalia's Scourge. I love her.

Here is rule 101.4a: [101.4a If an effect has each player choose a card in a hidden zone, such as their hand or library, those cards may remain face down as they’re chosen. However, each player must clearly indicate which face-down card they are choosing.]

Now, what I suspect happens here is the following: because Jeleva doesn't specify that cards are exiled face-down, they are exiled face-up. After all, the cards aren't being "chosen."

However, what I would love to hear is "No, actually you can keep those cards face-down because they're moving from a hidden zone."

Which of these possibilities is actually the case?

Since nothing is being chosen, 101.4a has nothing to do with Jeleva, Nephalia's Scourge. Instead, the rule that applies is 406.3. Nothing specifies that the cards are exiled face down, ergo they are in the default exiled state of face up.

406.3. Exiled cards are, by default, kept face up and may be examined by any player at any time.

Yep. That is what I'd assumed, but also sad beans. Either way, thank you for clearing things up.

Also to note, unless something says you can look at a facedown card, nobody, including the owner/controller can look at it. If it did work the way you wanted it to, you would have to pick one at random and hope it was the correct type since she doesn't have the clause that lets you look at them.
