Is they a limit to how many token can spawn from a cards triggered ability?

Asked by TrashWolf95 5 years ago

I was playing Magic Arena and had 2 Desecrated Tomb on the field and a Bone Dragon in my graveyard.

I exiled 7 creature zombies from my graveyard to return Bone Dragon to the field.

I should have got 16 bat tokens because 8 cards left my graveyard and I had 2 Tombs but I only got 4.

Is this a glitch or is this a rule that says you can only get 4 tokens per triggered ability I'm unaware of?

Arena did it right. You activate the ability and exile 7 cards from your graveyard. Desecrated Tomb's trigger says "whenever one or more..." and so only triggers once no matter how many creature cards leave as a single event, netting you 2 bats. Then Bone Dragon leaves the graveyard to be put on the battlefield, netting you 2 more bats.

It has to do with the specific way Desecrated Tomb's ability is written. Notice that it says "whenever one or more..." and only says you get one token period, not one for each card that left the graveyard. If multiple creature cards leave the battlefield simultaneously you just get one Bat. Here's what happened in your situation:

  • You activate Bone Dragon's ability. Each Tomb triggers once as you pay the cost for the ability.
  • The Tomb triggers resolve and give you one Bat each
  • The Dragon's ability resolves and it moves to the battlefield. Each Tomb triggers again.
  • The Tomb triggers resolve and give you one Bat each

TrashWolf95 - in the future, please remember to hit the "Mark as Answer" button when someone answers your question. This indicates you no longer need assistance on your question as well as makes it a bit easier for other players to quickly identify the answer if they have the same question.

Since this has been answered for a couple days, I have gone ahead and marked Rhadamanthus' post as Accepted, though Gidgetimer is equally correct, as I felt Rhadamanthus was about very slightly more clear on how the stack would work.
