Is a creature card in your grave a creature?

Would Return to the Ranks be cheaper to cast due to Battlefield Thaumaturge ? I am guessing not, because a creature card isn't a creature. But I thought I'd double check.

This is what makes Animate Dead such a confusing card. The Oracle text on that beast is ... unwieldy to say the least.

You are correct, a creature card and an actual creature are different things. Creatures only exist on the battlefield, in every other zone they are creature cards.
