Interaction between Chandra, Pyromaster's -7 ability and Call the Coppercoats

Asked by CamraMaan 2 years ago

So I have Chandra, Pyromaster in play and -7 her, exiling Call the Coppercoats... because I get to choose the number of targets, and each one increases the spells cost, versus being an additional cost, I'm assuming I can choose each opponent, and for no additional cost...? Of course, then tripling the spell. Or am I missing something in the rules here...? Thanks in advance! :)

Strive is an additional cost—like many abilities, it's a reflavored kicker (in this case multikicker) ability. See the rulings for strive:

If a spell or ability allows you to cast a strive spell without paying its mana cost, you must pay the additional cost for any targets beyond the first. (2020-04-17)

For a little more elaboration: a spell's "mana cost" is specifically the symbols printed in the upper-right corner of the standard Magic frame. If an effect lets you cast a spell "without paying its mana cost", that's the only part you get for free. Anything else still has to be paid.

Makes sense. The way it's worded it almost looked like there was a loophole. Appreciated!
