Interaction between Cadric, Soul Kindler and Path of Mettle  Flip... flipping tokens

Asked by CamraMaan 1 year ago

I have Cadric, Soul Kindler in play and cast Path of Mettle  Flip, creating a token copy. When I attack with two qualifying creatures to trigger Path of Mettle, does the token flip and become Metzali, Tower of Triumph  Flip?

Thanks in advance!

No, the ability will fail. Tokens cannot transform.

Relevant rulings:

701.27a To transform a permanent, turn it over so that its other face is up. Only permanents represented by double-faced cards can transform.

110.5e A token is subject to anything that affects permanents in general or that affects the token’s card type or subtype. A token isn’t a card (even if represented by a card that has a Magic back or that came from a Magic booster pack).

Does the token cease to exist if it is forced to transform...? Or does it simply do nothing?

For tokens, if the card simply causes the object to transform without changing zones, like Bloodline Keeper  Flip), nothing will happen and the token will remain on its front side.

If the transform ability includes an exile effect, like Jace, Vryn's Prodigy  Flip, then the token will be exiled and cease to exist - it will not return to the battlefield in any manner.

701.28c If a spell or ability instructs a player to transform a permanent that isn’t represented by a transforming double-faced card, nothing happens.
