Interacting/overlapping replacement effects?

Asked by MagicalHacker 9 years ago

An opponent played Divine Presence . Next, another opponent played his commander Szadek, Lord of Secrets . When Szadek attacks, what the heck happens?!

For conflicting replacement effects, the player or controller of the affected permanent affected chooses which order they happen. So in this case, szadek hits a player. The hit player chooses which order to do the replacement effects. So, he could either have szadek mill, then reduce the szadek damage (which would have no effect at this point), or, more likely, he'll have the damage reduced to 3 first, then szadek will mill him 3.

For reference, also check the ruling on Szadek's gatherer page:

"10/1/2005 If another effect would prevent Szadek's combat damage from being dealt to the defending player or replace it with something else, that player chooses which effect applies first. For example, the player can choose to first have Mending Hands prevent 4 of the damage and then apply Szadek's ability so that it gets only one counter."

Yep, whoever is affected by the replacement effects always chooses what order to apply them in, so Sazdek is likely dealing 3 mill.
