Inadvertently playing with a banned card

Asked by MountainMan817 9 years ago

I was recently playing some casual magic (Modern format builds) at the local card shop and my opponent plays Treasure Cruise.

Now, I know that the card got banned and I could tell his U/R delver deck was going to have it and I wasn't upset that he played it in this casual setting.

But what if this had happened in a sanctioned event? I know competitors should be responsible enough to make sure their decks are legal prior to play, but would this fall on a judge for not performing a deck check? Would that player forfeit the game? the match? the tournament?!

This has never happened to me before haha

That's going to depend on the REL, or Rules Enforcement Level. FNM is typically Regular REL.

This is covered in section 3.9 of this. The listed penalty for a Deck/Decklist Problem (which includes having illegal cards for the format) is a Game Loss. However, at Regular REL, the judge may choose to downgrade that penalty.

Either way, the illegal cards will be removed. The guide says to replace them with basic lands, but again, that is at the discretion of the judge at Regular REL.

Also, this isn't a card rules question and should not be asked in the Q&A.

I clicked on the link to ask a question about "game rules and card interactions" as this is a question about game rules.

A question about tournament rules is just fine for MTG Q&A. You posted in the right place.

@nighthawk101: The Q&A handles any game rules questions, not just card ones.

Huh. I could have sworn there was another thread about tournament rules and the poster was informed that the Q&A was for card questions only.

Sorry!

That poster was probably "informed" by another user who had gotten the wrong impression from another misguided response to a previous topic, and so on and so forth down the halls of history. Chicken, egg, etc.
