Imprinting commander for free?

Asked by Warxuaroz 7 years ago

I got hit by an overloaded Cyclonic Rift.

I had a Chrome Mox and my white commander on the battlefield.

Can I put the Mox into play and imprint my commander on it and then, in response, put the commander into the command zone?

Will the Mox lose its ability to tap for mana or is it impossible to relocate my commander this way?

Can you do it? Yes.

Will it have the intended effect? Probably not what you wanted.

With Chrome Mox and your commander in hand you may play Chrome Mox imprinting your commander, and Chrome Mox will attempt to exile your commander. If you choose to, you may replace the exiling with sending your commander to the command zone as per the commander rules. Chrome Mox will not, however, be able to tap for mana, as there is no card in exile from its imprint ability. You would get the same result if the imprinted card was Pull from Eternityed.

Chrome Mox will still be able to tap as a mana ability (meaning it can't be responded to), but it will produce nothing on resolution.

Note that you actually can't put your commander in the command zone "in response" - the rule that lets you return the commander there when it would be exiled (and other things) works via a replacement effect, meaning when it would be exiled because you're imprinting it, you may choose to put it in the command zone instead. If you do, there will be no exiled card, and while nothing prevents you from activating the ability, it won't do anything on resolution.
