I'm having trouble understanding Scion of the Ur-Dragon's ability?

Asked by jotjot 9 years ago

When I activate Scion of the Ur-Dragon 's ability twice. Let's say I'm going for the kill with Moltensteel Dragon and Skithiryx, the Blight Dragon, there will be 2 abilities on the stack. When the first resolves Scion becomes Moltensteel then i pump him then he becomes Skithiryx.I just don't understand why he became Skithiryx when he's already Moltensteel (no longer named Scion of the Ur-Dragon) when the second ability on the stack resolves. Thank you!

Whatever has happened to the source of the ability, it is still on the stack and it will still resolve if able. You know that although the card now has CMC of 6, has the Phyrebreathing ability, and is called "Moltensteel Dragon", it is still your Scion of the Ur-Dragon. The ability, if you like, knows that too.

Whenever a card uses its own name in its text, the use is self-referential and means "this object" (the only exception is when the text reads "a card named ~," or something to that effect). The ability doesn't care about the name of the object, it just cares about the object itself. When Scion of the Ur-Dragon becomes a copy of Moltensteel Dragon, it's still the same object because it hasn't changed zones. It just changed its characteristics.

The other instance of Scion of the Ur-Dragon's ability then resolves, and it looks for the object that was its source. Because that object (which is currently a copy of Moltensteel Dragon) is still in the proper zone and is still the same object, the ability resolves and causes it to become a copy of Skithiryx, the Blight Dragon.

So same goes for Necrotic Ooze having the ability of Burnished Hart?

Yes. Gatherer ruling:

1/1/2011: If an activated ability of a card in a graveyard references the card it's printed on by name, treat Necrotic Ooze's version of that ability as though it referenced Necrotic Ooze by name instead. For example, if Cudgel Troll (which says "G: Regenerate Cudgel Troll") is in a graveyard, Necrotic Ooze has the ability "G: Regenerate Necrotic Ooze."
