If I use Whip of Erebos to unearth a creature and I then target them with Cloudshift, what happens?

Asked by EmoKittyKisses 9 years ago

Whip of Erebos exiles the creature when they leave play, but Cloudshift also exiles the creature (causing them to leave play). Does the creature return to the battlefield after Cloudshift resolves? Similarly, what if I use the first ability of Venser, the Sojourner on the unearthed creature? Do they return?

The creature will be exiled with Cloudshift 's ability, and will then reenter the battlefield as a new object, with no memory of its previous interaction with Whip of Erebos . It will therefore not be exiled by Whip at the end step. This also works with cards like AEtherling and Obzedat, Ghost Council .

Always check the Gather rulings before asking a question.

9/15/2013: If a creature returned to the battlefield with Whip of Erebos would leave the battlefield for any reason, its exiled instead. However, if that creature is already being exiled, then the replacement effect wont apply. If the spell or ability that exiles it later returns it to the battlefield (as Chained to the Rocks might, for example), the creature card will return to the battlefield as a new object with no relation to its previous existence. The effects from Whip of Erebos will no longer apply to it.
